Authentic Middle Eastern Food, Warm Atmosphere - If you're looking for an authentic Middle Eastern dining experience, Gazala is the place to go. The restaurant, which first started at Ninth Avenue and 48th Street, opened an UWS branch over the summer. Fresh pitas are made on the premises. The lighting is low, the brick walls are accented by tile decorations, and you might catch a glimpse of Gazala, the owner and primary chef, in the kitchen or even receive a visit to your table from her. Gazala is now cooking at the restaurant on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Lamb shank is well-prepared and easily falls off the bone. Lentil soup is rich and flavorful. The meze appetizer will give you a taste of a variety of Middle Eastern specialities such as hummus, tahini sauce, falafel, and homemade grape leaves. Specials sometimes include Gazala's special, which is whatever the chef would conjure for her own meal, and is served as a surprise. While the restaurant doesn't yet have a liquor license, it is BYOB with a $5 corking fee. Given the BYOB feature and many reasonably priced menu items, Gazala's is a budget-friendly place for a delicious dinner.
