The Sugar Bar was established in 1996 by Nicholas Ashford and his wife Valerie Simpson, of the songwriting and performing sensation, Ashford & Simpson. Located inside a beautiful brownstone, it has a soulful, cultural, elegant ambiance.
The Sugar Bar showcases local and international talent, from R&B/Soul, Jazz, and Caribbean, to traditional African Rythems. This sets the mood for an intimate enjoyable evening of delectable cuisine. Under the direction of chef Berthony Pierre, The Sugar Bar offers an array of Afro-Caribbean classics such as the house specialty, Paella, fish of the day, red snapper, sea bass, and the most requested dish, parilla de mar. Try one of their specialty Sugartinis in the main dining room where every table has an excellent view of the stage, or at their breezy outsidecafe.
Since it's inception the Sugar Bar has served as a stepping stone for aspiring singer/song writers. Superstars like Patte Le Belle and Chaka Khan have also visited for their SPO Thursday Night Open-Mic events. Unless they are on the road, you will find Ashford & Simpson always present on Thursday nights.
